discussing which class for the progression server
so there's the tanks: paladin, warrior, shadowknight.
i've decided if i'm going to do such a crucial role as tanking, i don't want to be a hybrid. it's just plain not fun. so if i'm tanking again, it's going to be as a warrior.
with that said, the race options are varied.
gnomes are short, giving the neat fact given the fact that their stature is short, yet they tank the biggest creatures. the added bonus of tinkering is neat.
barbarians have the benefit of what i consider the coolest plate look, further more few people choose the beard hair combo i do, and throw in a decend swiss name and youve got a very believable and likeable character model, with no special abilities, such as tinker, etc.
dwarves are a race ive played alot over the years, they've been my choice the majority of my time in eq, and i've definately got that deep love for them, both having been used to the model, and the lore behind the race. no special abilities, beyond the graphic-only dwarven roll. that, and best beards in the game on a character model. and kaladim is just a cool starting city, dwarven mining town in the heart of a mountain, what more could you want?
halflings are another interesting plate choice again for their short stature but there's just something about 'em i don't really dig, they're too childlike for me really and it's just not my thing bottom line im thinking.
humans major problem is the helm, certainly one of the worst looking, but if you can get over that youre left with a gaunt but athletic frame which kinda looks neat plus interesting face styles hwoever ive always had a peeve with the hair choices available to humans the poor quality on the hair graphic just lowers the models look alot. one thing to note drakkins were meant as the human replacement upgrade so if you really want to look like a real living person the drakkin may be for you with the best motion movements emotes and in some cases best armor graphics however in others its arguable.
ogres are the classic big guy they have stun immunity innate from level one and not much else. the height can be a nuisance but that can be remedied through potion or item. the evil affliation can be limiting but only if you travel to old world cities and in modern eq it shouldnt be a problem. the armor is a bit kitschy with a big skull and bones stenciled on the belly but perhaps if you can dye that out youre left with something potent. however for me the ogres have always been threadbare in the lore department they were a once great empire struck down by gods and now cursed by idiocy. its not the greatest storyline and yes your character too is struck down by the very same idocy as your ancestors. to me the story is unappealing and there's not much compelling about them so in the end i usually feel like im prostituting myself out to make an ogre just to get those plate graphics.
trolls on the other hand have always had a draw for me. they literally do hail from the swamplands of grobb and its just a cool race. this guy literally looks like something youd encounter in the world as an npc hostile such as a goblin or other such thing. ive always liked the troll under the bridge tale and ive recently read more icelandic literature regarding trolls and their involvement in icelandic folklore with some interesting results. to me its kinda interesting to have these horrible ancient creatures who live in the mountains and under bridges come out and gobble people up from time to time however those were of course very alrge trolls these on the other hand are very small small enough to be compared in height to a human. but the troll in my mind gives you the chance to be something not quite evil not quite good but something else altogether
